Abstract
1311197 Measuring thickness of sheet material FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 21 April 1970 19137/70 Heading G1M The variation in thickness across the width of a travelling web 3 is measured using two thickness measuring gauges, the first gauge 1 being fixed in position and the second gauge 2 travelling across the width of the web. By subtracting the reading of the fixed gauge 1 from the travelling gauge 2, variations in the thickness of the web along the direction of travel (which variations are assumed to be constant across the width of the web) are compensated for. Gauges 1 and 2 may be close to each other (along the direction of movement) when the reading of gauge 1 is directly subtracted from that of gauge 2, or the gauges may be spaced as shown when the reading of gauge 1 must be stored for the time the web takes to travel between the gauges before subtraction. For storing, the values may be converted into an analog value which is converted into a digital value e.g. a frequency, which can be stored on a magnetic recording system. The readings of the two gauges may be subtracted by conventional electric devices. The variation in thickness across the width of a web of a coating applied to the web may be determined by arranging the fixed gauge on the uncoated web and the travelling gauge on the coated web,
