Abstract
1310985 Stabilized polymer dispersions BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 20 Aug 1970 [21 Aug 1969] 40108/70 Heading C3P Aqueous dispersions of polymers of one or more olefinically unsaturated monomers are stabilized against light degradation by including therein 0À1-5% by weight, with reference to the polymer content, of a reaction product of an ester of p-amino-benzoic acid with an alkylene oxide. Suitable reaction products are those of the formula wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, R<SP>1</SP> is H or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, X, Y and Z are individually 0 or an integer, and x + y + z = from 1-50. The reaction products may be present during the formation of the polymer dispersions (i.e. during the polymerization of the monomers) or may be added to preformed polymer dispersions. In examples the products are present during the emulsion polymerization of (1) butadiene, acrylonitrile, methacrylamide and acrylic acid, (2) butyl acrylate, butadiene, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid and methylolmethacrylamide, (3) acrylonitrile, methylolmethacrylamide, acrylic acid, ethyl acrylate and butyl acrylate, (4) butadiene, styrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylic acid and methacrylamide, (5) butyl acrylate, styrene, ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, methacrylamide, acrylic acid, methylolacrylamide, methacrylic acid and vinylpyrrolidone, and (6) butyl acrylate, butadiene, acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride, methacrylic acid, styrene, methacrylamide and ethyl methacrylate. The dispersions may optionally contain further additives such as pigments, thickeners and antifoams and can be used in such applications as coating compositions, adhesives, binders for nonwovens, textile impregnations and finishes, and leather finishes.
