Abstract
1310651 Electro-depositing metal to produce an embossing cylinder LES ETABS MARECHAL SA 28 April 1971 11891/71 Heading C7B [Also in Divisions B6 and G2] In the photo-mechanical production of an embossing cylinder (see Division G2-G3), the raised areas are formed by electro-depositing metal through the open areas of a resist image on the surface of the cylinder. Specifically, a copper-plated steel cylinder bearing a photo-resist image is etched, the resist image reinforced with varnish, the surface electro-plated with copper using an aqueous bath containing CuSO 4 (230 g. 1<SP>-1</SP>) and H 2 SO 4 (50 g. l<SP>-1</SP>) using 4 amp dm<SP>-2</SP> current density, the protective coating and resist removed, and the whole surface electro-plated with chromium using an aqueous bath containing chromic acid (250 g.l<SP>-1</SP>) and H 2 SO 4 (2À5 g.l<SP>-1</SP>) and a current density of 25 amp. dm<SP>-2</SP>. Alternatively the etched areas are protected with wax, the photoresist removed and the thus bared areas electroplated with copper.
