Abstract

1310408 Exercising device MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 8 July 1970 [15 July 1969] 33128/70 Heading A6M A wheelless exercise bicycle is fitted with an electrically powered audio and/or video encouragement device, such as a record player, which is operatively connected to a flywheel coupled to the pedals of the bicycle in such a way that the device is activated only when the flywheel is rotated at a speed in excess of a predetermined minimum value. In an embodiment the bicycle comprises an upper body 54, carrying a saddle 56, handlebars 55 load-adjusting grip 69, and record player 63, connected to a lower body 10 by means of connector 59. Within the lower body 10 a large driving sprocket 47 is mounted on a crank shaft 37 which also carries pedals 46 on cranks 44a and 44b. The crank shaft is connected by an endless chain to a small sprocket wheel 47 mounted on the axle of flywheel 40. A dynamo 49 is mounted in body 10 so that its rotor is driven by rotation of the flywheel 40 and the current generated is passed to the record player 63 via voltage stabilizer 17 and cord 68. The loading of the flywheel is adjusted by means of link 27 carrying damping roll 26 which is pressed onto the flywheel to a degree which is controlled by the grip 69. In use the exerciser sets the loading by adjustment of grip 69 and begins to pedal. When the rate of rotation of the flywheel exceeds a set value the record player is activated and the sound then enables the rider to pedal rythmically. A modification in which the record player is replaced by a rotary slide projector is also disclosed.
