Abstract
1310103 Making decorative panels; stamping; shearing ZEALAND ENG CO Ltd and P N F LANGMEAD 26 March 1970 [28 March 1969 4 June 1969] 16517/69 and 28219/69 Headings B3A B3Q and B3W Decorative tiles are made by partially forming depressions in a blank, severing the partially formed blank from a sheet of material by means of a punch and a cutting die, and then completing formation of the depressions while the tile is still in the cutting die, so that the periphery of the tile is slightly withdrawn from the wall of the die to facilitate removal of the tile. Stainless-steel strip is fed through a punch-anddie unit, Fig. 3, and a scrap cutter 40, 41. The unit includes an embossing punch 21 co-operating with a resilient die-pad 26, a cutting punch 19 with a V-shaped edge 20 coacting with a cutting die 14, a hold-down 27 and ejector pins 36, 35 in the die-holder 13 and punch 21 respectively. Passages for ejection by compressed-air may also be provided in the pad 21. Screws 39 set the position of the pad 26, the die 21 being biased downwardly by springs 25. As the punch descends embossing starts, Fig. 4 (not shown), before cutting-out (Fig. 5) which takes place before embossing is completed (Fig. 6), the edge of the tile retracting slightly (33). A rigid die may replace the pad 26. A variable die 21 may be used formed by a layer of flexible material overlaying the beads of adjustable screws. This die may be used as a pattern for casting a solid die. A master tile may be formed by hand, from which two or more casts are made. One of these is used in making one or more punches and the other or others are retained as masters.
