Abstract

1309419 Forming reticulate sheets and films JOHNSON & JOHNSON 15 Sept 1970 [15 Sept 1969] 44037/70 Headings B5A and B5B A high density polyethylene or isotactic polypropylene sheet 71 is fed from a roll 72 over a roll 75 and around a roll 76 heated by circulating steam therethrough before passing over a foaming roll 77, which can be heated or cooled and has resilient protrusions to form the sheet into a net. After cooling the net is passed through nip rolls 79, 80 to a transverse stretching mechanism 81 having a pair of diverging chain conveyers 82 mounted within an oven 87, and then to a longitudinal stretching device 91 which has a pair of rolls 94, 95 driven at a faster speed than a pair of rolls 92, 93, both pairs being disposed within an oven 97. During stretching any flash films left in the openings of the net disappear and merge into the filaments of the net. The sheet is finally passed to a wind-up mechanism 98.
