1309223 #<SP>4,9</SP>-3-Oxosteroids F HOFFMANNLA ROCHE & CO AG 19 Jan 1971 [19 Jan 1970] 2568/71 Headings C2C and C2U d-, l- and dl-Steroids of formula (wherein Z is carbonyl or a group of formula where R<SP>4</SP> is hydroxy, C 1-7 alkoxy or C 1-8 alkanoyloxy and R<SP>5</SP> is H, C 1-7 alkyl, C 2-7 alkenyl or C 2-7 alkynyl, or R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> together form C 1-4 alkylenedioxy; R<SP>1</SP> is C 1-7 alkyl; and R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are each H or C 1-7 alkyl) are prepared by cyclizing compounds of formula in the presence of a strong organic or inorganic acid or of a salt of an organic or inorganic acid with an organic nitrogen-containing base. The examples relate to the preparation of d- and dl-estra-4,9-diene-3,17-dione. (Œ) - 4 - (3,7 - Dioxo - octyl) - 7a - methylperhydroindan-1,5-dione is prepared by chromic oxidation of (Œ)-3-(4-oxopentyl)-6a#-methylperhydrocyclopenta[f][1]benzopyran-4a,7-diol. (+) - 4 - (3,7 - Dioxo - octyl) - 7a# - methylperhydroindan-1,5-dione is prepared by chromic oxidation of ( - ) - 3 α - (4 - hydroxypentyl)- 6a# - methyl - perhydrocyclopenta[f][l]benzopyran. 4a,7#-diol which is itself prepared by hydration of ( -)- 3α - (4 - hydroxypentyl) - 6a# - methyl- 1,2,3,5,6,6a,7,8,9,9a - decahydrocyclopenta[f]- [1]benzopyran-7#-ol.
