Abstract

1309201 Transferring articles between endless conveyers F E HELFAND and M B BAER 18 May 1971 [17 July 1970] 15436/71 Heading B8A [Also in Division G4] Material containers are sorted in accordance with signals derived from signals obtained by sensing alphanumeric codes on the containers by means of an optical-to-electric converter as the containers are being transported on a conveyer. Items of luggage at an airport bear labels printed with the alphanumeric codes which are read by a modified vidicon scanner, the alphanumeric characters being recognized in a first mini-computer, the output of which is supplied to a second mini-computer where it is stored, processed, decoded into a sorting code and compared with a preprogrammed repertoire to produce a timed command signal to control diversion (if appropriate) of the container on to a branch conveyer. The diversion is accomplished by raising and lowering vertical sheetlike diversion members, the transfer section including rollers (some of which may be powerdriven). Arrival of the container at the scanning station, and exit of it from the main conveyer are detected photoelectrically to prepare and reset the circuitry. The command signals may also cause weighing of the containers, and storage and print-out of the label information.
