Abstract

1309110 Venting fuel tanks TOYO KOGYO CO Ltd 23 Sept 1970 [24 Sept 1969] 45416/70 Heading B8X [Also in Division F1] In an arrangement for containing and subsequently consuming fuel vapour escaping from a vent of a fuel tank 1 for supplying fuel to an internal combustion engine, an engine has an inlet manifold 13 to which air/fuel mixture is supplied from a carburetter 12 and an air cleaner 17, conduit means 9 and 10 being provided to connect a fuel tank vent to engine crankcase 8, a fuel vapour absorption canister 15 being connected in a conduit 16, 18 extending between crankcase 8 and air cleaner 17 and a further conduit 10 and 10<SP>1</SP> extending between crankcase 8 and inlet manifold 13, there being a non-return valve 11 in the said further conduit so that, when the engine is inoperative, fuel vapour received by the engine via conduit means 9, 10 can accumulate within crankcase 8 before passing to canister 15, and when the engine is operating, fuel vapour can be drawn into manifold 13 through valve 11 from conduit means 9, 10, crankcase 8 and canister 15. A condensation tank 2 is connected by tubes 3 and 5 to fuel tank 1 and fuel filler tube 6 to condense fuel-vapour from the tank and return it thereto. An oil separator 14 is provided in crankcase 8 to prevent oil entering connection tube 10. The tube 9 may be connected directly to crankcase 8 instead of being connected thereto by tube 10. Fuel vapour evaporating from carburetter 12 when the engine is inoperative is partly absorbed in canister 15 via tube 18.
