Abstract
1308789 Cable terminations G & W ELECTRIC SPECIALITY CO 23 Oct 1970 50397/70 Heading H2E A cable terminating device comprises a plastics tubular housing 10 integral with a junction pad 11, the housing comprising a recess 15 and a passageway 16 which extend into a through-hole 24 into the pad. The external and internal surfaces of the housing have conductive coatings 12, 13 for electrostatic screening and the housing is surrounded by a metal casing 30 which is fixed at one end to an endmember 31 having an opening (44) and supporting a stress control metal shield comprising spring fingers 34, and an annular sponge element 35. In its unused state the hole 24 is closed by plastics caps (not shown), the rear end of the device being sealed by a plastics film 41, while the housing and a clamping ring 42 thereon are filled with a blend of polybutanes and polyolefines. The cable end to be terminated is stripped of its insulation and fitted with a metal connector 17 having a tang 18 with an opening (23). The tang 18 is passed through an opening (46) in a peripheral sealing diaphragm 40, perforating the plastics film 41 until its opening (23) lies within the pad hole 24, the excess blend escaping through the hole (44) in the endmember 31 from which a plug (45) is removed. An earth strap 49 covered with a cushion 56 is clamped to the cable and connected to the clamping ring 42 at 55. A compression cylinder 50 and a flexible boot 48 surrounding the cable are secured to the ring 42 by bolts 52. The pad 11 is connected to the pad 11a of a second cable fitted with an identical terminating device by a nut 63 and bolt 61 and a metal spacer 58 positioned in the through-holes in the pads, there being elastomeric gaskets, 60, 70 situated between the two pads and between plastics end-plates 64, 64a secured to the plates by bolts 71. In a modification (Figs. 6-8, not shown) terminating devices are connected to the terminal conductors (87-89) of a switch, the housings of each device being formed as a bush 95 extending through the switch housing and attached thereto by a metal flange 94 incorporated in the bush 95. In a further modification (Figs. 9, 10, not shown) three devices are used to form a T-joint. A stop-end is formed by applying two end-plates 64, 64a to one device.
