Abstract

1308054 Separating liquid from solids ROSE DOWNS & THOMPSON Ltd 24 June 1971 [1 July 1970] 31840/70 Heading B1D Slurry to be separated, for example a mixture of crystallised wax and oil produced by chilling the oil, is delivered through inlet 15 and alowed to settle in chamber 12, after which a displacement liquid such as water, denser than both constituents of the slurry, is delivered through inlet 14 and displaces the wax and oil upwards, the wax being retained against a filter 13 of wire mesh, cloth or wedge wire. The water displaces the oil from the wax, oil and water being discharged through outlet 18 to a settling tank, and chamber 12 is then drained of water via outlet 16. A fluid, in the example steam, is delivered through inlet 20 to remove the wax from filter 13 through outlet 17 for subsequent separation from the fluid. In the example the steam melts the wax, but the solid phase of the slurry could be discharged as a solid. The chamber 12 is cooled for the next cycle by passing chilled water from 14 to 18. A plurality of chambers 12 may operate in sequence to provide continuous separation.
