Abstract

1307158 Lamps PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 June 1971 [30 June 1970] 29936/71 Heading F4R A lighting fitting comprises a housing 4 and a rotatable light-transmitting knob 14 which together enclose one or more light sources 2, 3, the knob being mechanically connected to a potentiometer 19, 20 inside the fitting so that, by rotation of the knob, the luminance of the sources can be continuously varied. Depression of the knob operates an on-off switch 18. The sources may be incandescent filament or glow discharge lamps. The potentiometer may be connected in series with the sources but preferably forms part of the control circuit for a controlled semi-conductor switch 21, such as a triac or a pair of anti-parallel thyristors, connected in parallel with the sources. The fitting may be mounted on the wall of a room and be connected in series with a ceiling-mounted lamp 6, such as an incandescent filament bulb, so that rotation of the knob 14 causes the luminance of the sources 2, 3 to increase as the luminance of the lamp 6 decreases, and vice versa. The lamp 6 may be a low pressure mercury vapour lamp shunted by a high resistance.
