Abstract

1305128 Urea-formaldehyde foamed bodies ELECTROLUX AB 25 Nov 1970 [28 Nov 1969 26 March 1970] 56135/70 Headings C3C and C3R Urea-formaldehyde foamed bodies are made by separately feeding into a confined mixing zone having a foam ejection nozzle connected thereto and means for injecting compressed air, two aqueous solutions, the first solution being neutral to alkaline and containing 30 to 50% by weight of a precondensation product of urea with formaldehyde Laving a molar formaldehyde to urea ratio of between 1À8:1 and 22:1 and 10-20 ml./l. of an aqueous solution containing 50% by weight of a sulphite waste liquor on a dry basis, and the second solution containing an acid catalyst or hardener and 2 to 8% by weight of a foaming agent selected from alkyl, aryl and alkylaryl sulphonates. After mixing in the zone, the mix is foamed by compressed air, ejected from the zone via the nozzle and subsequently set. The preferred hardeners are phosphoric, formic and oxalic acids. The first solution may contain a small amount of a foam shrink preventative such as calcium carbonate, and also copper phthalocyanine as a flame-proofing agent. Fillers or extenders such as glass fibres, quartz powder, and asbestos may be added to the first solution. A flow-type diagram of apparatus suitable for carrying out the process is also included in the Specification. The foamed bodies may have densities from 4 to 40 kg./m.<SP>3</SP>
