Abstract
1304859 Modified alkyd resins HOOKER CHEMICAL CORP 19 Dec 1969 [30 Dec 1968] 31066/72 Divided out of 1304858 Headings C3P and C3R Modified alkyd resins are prepared by reacting an organic polyisocyanate with allyl alcohol and/or methallyl alcohol at an NCO/OH ratio of 1À4 to 2À2 and reacting the so-formed isocyanate group-containing adduct in the melt at 140‹ to 210‹ C. with sufficient of an alkyd resin to provide a modified alkyd resin containing substantially no free isocyanate groups. Toluene diisocyanate is the preferred organic polyisocyanate. A catalyst for the NCO-OH reaction may be employed in the formation of the adduct and in the reaction of the adduct with the alkyd resin. The modified alkyd resins may be converted to insoluble, infusible products by heating them in the presence of free radical catalysts and optionally reinforcing fillers such as cloth mats and fibres. In an example, toluene diisocyanate is reacted with allyl alcohol and the resulting adduct is reacted with an alkyd resin prepared from isophthalic acid, propylene glycol and fumaric acid.
