Abstract

1304550 Retractive switches AMP Inc 15 Oct 1971 [16 Dec 1970] 59817/70 Heading H1N A switch assembly comprises a resilient diaphragm 12 formed integrally with an operating member 16 an actuating button 15, and a tubular housing 2 depression of the button 15 causing the member 16 to separate contact portions 20 which are biased closed. A contact portion housing 3 has a resilient end cap 33; and terminals Fig. 5 providing the resilient contact portions 20, the terminals being located in grooves 6, 7 Fig. 3 in a co-axial boss 5 of the housing 3 and being retained therein between latches 9 and stops 8 Fig. 2 (not shown), the stops were located at the end of the boss which extends into the housing 2. Portion 27 of the contact abuts the stop and the latch engages behind the raised portions of the member 28 adjacent the wire crimping arms 30, 31. The operating member is formed with two parts, 17, 18 the part of smaller diameter 17 passing through a hole defined by a tapering groove in each of the abutting contacts and extending into the guide bore of the boss 5. The diaphagm is arranged with a thin membrane 14 between a helical, rectangular cross-sectioned, strip 13, the membrane collapsing when the actuating button is depressed to compress the helix such that the enlarged diameter portion of the operating member 16 moves towards the contacts and subsequently separates them "opening" the switch. The housing 2 is formed of sufficient thickness to be relatively rigid and may be of nylon. The housings 2 and 3 are adhesively fixed together. The switch may be used to operate a courtesy light in a vehicle.
