Abstract

1304231 Bowden mechanism linkwork; helical springs W A COOK 29 July 1970 36644/70 Headings F2K and F2S [Also in Division A5] A guide for a catheter comprises a coiled spring 30 having a wire 40 attached, preferably by solder inserts 22, 31, to the ends of the coil. A tapered mandrel 35, 36 is attached to the proximal end insert 31 and the guide normally assumes a J-shape with the distal end 25 curved. The wire allows the guide to be straightened, by separation of the coil turns adjacent the proximal end, and also allows transmission of torque to portion 25 to allow rotation about the longitudinal axis of the guide. The wire, mandrel and coil spring may be soldered together at spaced points along the length of the spring adjacent the proximal end thereof. In use the guide is introduced into a blood vessel through a needle, the needle withdrawn, and a catheter slid over the guide up to about the portion 25. X-ray observation then allows the guide to position the catheter in the required vessel or branch vessel, Fig. 7 (not shown), the guide then being withdrawn.
