1302727 Measuring gas flow electrically CHARBONNAGES DE FRANCE 15 June 1970 [16 June 1969(2)] 28949/70 Heading G1N In apparatus for determining the flow-rate of methane in a mixture with air, a fraction of the flow is extracted at a lower rate of flow proportional to the flow-rate V in the conduit 1 carrying the gas mixture which fraction is passed over two detector thermistors in series-connection, one ThQ being downstream of an orifice 3 disposed in the flow whilst the other ThG is in a porous container 11 disposed at a place where the flow fraction is substantially stationary, the combined resistance of the two thermistors being compared with that of a reference Th R in a closed air-filled chamber 2 at the same ambient temperature and a signal S dependent on the value of electrical energy required to maintain the total resistance of the detector thermistors at a given value is used as a measure of the net flow-rate of pure methane in the conduit. In an alternative embodiment Fig.9 (not shown) a third detector thermistor (Th p ) is provided which compensates for the difference in temperature between atmosphere and the inside of the conduit. The prf of heating pulses to the detector thermistors is representative of the flow-rate of pure methane. The measuring circuit 13 is as described in Specification 1214266 (see Division G1) to which reference is made.
