Abstract

1302582 Cathode-ray tubes SONY CORP 17 April 1970 [17 April 1969(2)] 41334/72 Heading H1D An electron tube for displaying numbers or the like comprises a number of selectively energizable fluorescent segments mounted on an insulating base and surrounded by a planar electrode also mounted on the base. In Fig. 5 a plurality of fluorescent segments A1-A7 each connected to an individual lead-in are arranged in apertures in a surrounding electrode G, the apertures forming an outline of a figure eight; the segments and the electrode may be coatings on an insulating base, and the electrode may be coated with opaque material. A negative voltage of 20 to 100 volts is applied to the surrounding electrode and a positive voltage of 20 volts to the segments to be illuminated: alternatively the surrounding electrode may also be luminescent so that a number 8 is displayed by making it light whilst the segments are dark. The base plate 5 carrying the electrodes and their associated leads 10 1 -10 8 and terminals 7 1 -7 8 may be entirely sealed within an evaculated envelope but preferably the edge extends outside the envelope to expose the terminals, and the plate may form one wall of the envelope (Figs. 7-11, not shown).
