Abstract

1301235 Reducing metal ores CONZINC RIOTINTO OF AUSTRALIA Ltd 14 July 1971 [22 July 1970] 32959/71 Heading C7D Oxidic materials are calcined above 450‹C and the hot calcine mixed with a carbonaceous reducing agent containing a caking component; flux and/or carbonaceous binder may also be incorporated. The blend is agglomerated while hot and smelted in a shaft furnace. Preferably the calcine is cooled to 590-660‹C before blending, and the mixture is discharged for briquetting at 380-440‹C. In one example iron ore is calcined, briquetted and smelted while in another low grade tin ore is similarly treated to produce a crude alloy containing 62-66% Sn and 33-37% Fe which may be subsequently refined to pure tin.
