Abstract
130,102. Whyte, S. Jan. 30, 1918. Etching.-Files or like tools having multiple cutting-teeth, which have become worn, are renovated by etching them, with or without the assistance of an electric current, after protecting the crests of the teeth by a metallic. deposit, for instance copper or mercury. In carrying out the operation, the file may be first cleaned by dilute nitric acid, chalk is then rubbed into the grooves, and the file dipped in a bath of copper sulphate until a film or copper is deposited on the crests of the teeth. After removal of the chalk the file may be etched in strong hydrochloric acid at 80 C. A coating of mercury may be deposited on the copper-coated crests by dipping the file in a dilute solution of mercurous nitrate, before the etching. Instead of strong hydrochloric acid, a bath of equal parts of hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and water may be used, or dilute nitric acid alone. Or dilute hydrochloric or nitric acid or mixtures thereof may be used and the etching assisted by an electric current, the crests of the teeth being protected by a coating of mercury as described.
