Abstract

1300815 Making metal strip; embossing by rolling BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP 18 March 1970 [20 March 1969] 13007/70 Headings B3A and B3M A metal strip is provided along its outer margins adjacent the edges with irregularly spaced projections, the projections serving to hold apart adjacent turns of the strip when it is coiled. The spacing of adjacent projections is non-uniform, so that projections of adjacent turns do not interfere with one another. In an example, a steel strip is coated with ferrochromium, is provided with projections by passing it between rolls, and is coiled. The coil is heated in a furnace containing a halogen gas, is uncoiled, and is rolled to flatten out the projections. To produce the projections, the strip is passed between a grooved roll 22 and a pair of rolls 38 carried on an adjustable shaft 26. Each roll 38 is provided with adjustable abutments 40, and the abutments on the two rolls are staggered relative to one another. Instead of axial grooves 48 on the roll 22, circumferential grooves may be used, each groove corresponding to a particular strip width.
