1300395 Chain gearing E B BATES 1 Dec 1970 [6 Dec 1969] 59684/69 Heading F2Q [Also in Division D1] A textile calendering machine, ironing machine, heat setting machine or printing machine comprises a driven roller 10 over the periphery of which textile goods in web or sheet form travel, the roller 10 being suspended by being slung in bights of two endless flexible elements 11 which are spaced apart lengthwise of the roller and are themselves guided and supported to circulate in endless paths, at least one of the elements 11 being driven and rotating the roller 10. In a blanket calender, Fig. 1, an openended calender roller 10 is suspended by two chains 11 each engaging a ring of teeth 12 around the periphery of the roller 10 near the end thereof. Each ring may have, at each side of the teeth, a smooth peripheral track which is engaged by the links. The chains 11 pass around driving sprockets 13. An endless blanket 14 of width slightly less than the distance between the two rings of teeth 12 engages the surface of the roller 10 and passes around rollers 15, 16, 17. The rollers 16, 17 are driven by chain and sprocket gearing 18, 19 to drive the blanket 14 at approximately the same speed as the peripheral speed of the roller 10. Guide rollers or runners (not shown) engaging faces of the teeth ring(s) 12 locate the roller 10 endwise. Non-rotatable heating apparatus 20 is supported within the roller 10 by a shaft 22 supported at end on uprights 23 and comprises a cylinder 24 carrying heating elements 26, e.g. encased tube electric elements or oil or gas burners. In another embodiment, Fig. 3., the chains 11 pass around sprockets 28, 29, 30, 31, and the blanket (not shown) may run over the upper part or the lower part of the roller 10 and may be guided by rollers located between each pair of sprockets 28, 29.
