1399895 Floor coverings ARMSTRONG CORK CO 16 June 1972 [16 June 1971] 28422/72 Heading B6G In a method of laying a resilient decorative floor covering comprising a fused vinyl resincontaining wear layer and a strippable backing layer which is substantially more thermally dimensionally stable than the wear layer and which is bonded to the wear layer to maintain the wear layer in a state of tension, the strippable backing layer is removed at the laying site and before the stresses in the wear layer have relaxed the wear layer is secured at its periphery to the surface to be covered to prevent relative movement between the wear layer and in the surface. In Example 1 a vinyl resin-containing plastisol containing a blowing agent and addition polymerizable monomer is coated on to a beater saturated asbestos felt backing having a methyl cellulose release coating, the coating gelled in an oven, printed with an ink containing an addition polymerization catalyst, coated with a clear coating material and then heated in an oven to expand the vinyl resin-containing composition into a foamed layer having overprinted area which are not expanded. After removal of the backing at the laying site the vinyl wear layer is secured at the perimeter of the surface to be covered by mechanical fastening means. In Example 2 a filled tessellated vinyl composition decorative surface covering in which the wear layer is bonded to a beater-saturated asbestos felt backing having a methyl cellulose release coat, is used and at the laying site the wear layer, after stripping of the backing, is laid over a foamed backing and secured to the surface to be covered at the periphery by means of an adhesive.
