Abstract
1399260 Magnetrons ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO Ltd 19 Nov 1973 [21 Dec 1972] 59136/72 Heading H1D The cathode structure of a quick-starting magnetron includes a first thermally emissive cathode of low heat inertia, and a second cathode member of relatively high heat inertia which is positioned between the first cathode and the anode, is provided with a continuous circumferential aperture to allow electrons to pass therethrough from the first cathode, and which partially screens the first cathode from electron bombardment during normal running of the magnetron, to prevent its temperature rising to an unacceptably high value. As described, in a magnetron having anode vanes V, the first cathode is formed by thermionically emissive material 1 on the surface of a thin-walled metal tube 2, which is secured at its ends to a cathode support 11 and on endhat 8, and is directly heated by current passed through the tube from support 11 to a central axial metal rod 10 secured to the end-hat 8. Coaxially surrounding cathode 1 is the main cathode and electron screen, formed by the two, similar, spaced, thick-walled tube portions 3 and 4 coated with secondary emissive or thermionically emissive material 5, 6, and supported from end-hat 8 and a second end-hat 9, respectively. The main cathode may be heated only by electron impact during operation, or may be separately heated.
