Abstract
1399161 Testing packages UNILEVER Ltd 29 June 1972 [1 July 1971] 30414/72 Heading B8C The effectiveness of the seal of a container is tested by inserting or incorporating an electrode 5 in the container to provide an electrically conductive path between the product and the exterior of the container, immersing at least the seal of the container in an electrolyte 1, applying a voltage between the electrode and electrolyte, and measuring the current flow. The electrode may comprise an insulated wire or foil passing through the seal as shown, or a plate electrode forming part of, and insulated from the rest of, the base of a metal container Alternatively the electrode may comprise a needle inserted into a plastics container during testing, with the hole formed by the needle being closed by a measured amount of molten plastics on removal of the needle.
