Abstract
1399085 Azo hydroxynaphthoic acid chlorides CIBA-GEIGY AG 6 March 1974 [9 March 1973] 10024/74 Heading C4P [Also in Division C2] Aromatic hydroxy carboxylic acid chlorides are prepared by reaction of aromatic hydroxy carboxylic acids with thionyl chloride in an inert solvent, the reaction being carried out in the presence of one or more quaternary ammonium salts. Example 2 describes the preparation of 1-(2<SP>1</SP>,5<SP>1</SP>-dichlorophenylazo)-2,3- hydroxynaphthoic acid chloride from the corresponding acid using thionyl chloride, methylene chloride as the solvent and anhydrous tetraethyl ammonium chloride. Example 3 describes the preparation of the acid chloride of 2 - hydroxy - 3 - carboxy - 1 - [2<SP>1</SP> - methoxy- 51 - carbonyl - (3<SP>11</SP> - trifluoromethylanilido)- phenylazo]naphthalene by reacting the acid with thionyl chloride with nitrobenzene as solvent and in the presence of tetrabutylammonium chloride.
