Abstract

1399058 Latches WILFRID OVERTON Ltd 4 April 1974 [7 April 1973] 16798/73 Heading E2A A slam latch for doors and other hinged or sliding members comprises a latching member 3 controlled by a toggle linkage comprising links 7, 9 pivoted together at 10, link 9 being pivoted to a fixed pivot 11 and link 7 being connected to member 3 by a pivot 8, the toggle linkage being movable to an over-centre position in which the nose 4 of latch member 3 engages a striker pin 5, the link 7 having an extension 17 which engages the pin 5 when the door or other member is slammed and which displaces the toggle linkage from its over-centre position to allow subsequent engagement of the striker pin against member 3 to retract it against a spring loading. As shown, the spring loading is generated by springs 15 and 16 respectively acting on links 7 and 9. In the embodiment shown the nose 4 is arcuate and concentric with the pivot axis of member 3 but in an alternative construction its centre of curvature is offset from this axis. The latching member may be hook and the pivot of the latching member may be located near the outer face of the door. The latch may be released by a rod 14 or by a push button acting on one of the links or a handle acting on one of the pivots. In the embodiment shown the movement of the linkage is limited by a stop 12 and in a further embodiment this stop is replaced by the inner end of a spring-loaded push button. The links may be split or slotted to receive each other. Striker may be a pin, as shown, a hook or a tooth or two teeth. The latch may be turned through 90‹ so that the pivot axes lie parallel to the plane of the door, and may control one or more slave latches of similar construction through tension rod or cables.
