Abstract
1398843 Gas electrode JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 10 July 1972 [10 July 1971] 32495/71 Heading H1B A gas electrode, for use in a metal-gas battery or fuel cell, comprises a porous substrate which supports a layer of catalyst material, the surface of the electrode which contacts the electrolyte being provided with a layer of a vinyl polymer or a polymer of acrylic acid or derivative thereof. Where the electrolyte is alkaline, the polymeric layer is formed from a polymeric alcohol or carboxylic acid; where the electrolyte is acidic, the layer is formed from a polymeric amine or amide. As described, an air electrode of a metal-air battery comprises a polythenebound graphite substrate bearing a layer of catalytically active carbon. For use with an electrolyte of aqueous KOH, which may be gelled with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, several coats of polyvinylalcohol in aqueous solution are applied to the catalytic layer and then coagulated by contact with the electrolyte; alternatively, sodium chloride may be included in the solution as a coagulating agent. In a modification, the catalytic layer is covered with a layer of polymethylacrylic acid. For use with an acidic electrolyte, polyacrylamide is preferred. If the substrate is non-conductive, a layer of conductive material is provided between substrate and catalytic layer.
