Abstract

1398668 Hydrofoil craft BOEING CO 6 Nov 1973 [21 June 1973] 51444/73 Headings B7A and B7V A hydrofoil craft 10 comprises a hull structure having a forward recess 40 in which is mounted a strut 14 carrying a foil 16 for movement between a retracted position (shown in dotdash lines) for hull-borne operation and an extended position (shown in full lines) for foilborne operation, the strut 14 when in extended position being restrained from further aft movement by a restraining member 42 having a reduced portion which will yield and break if the strut 14 engages an obstruction, permitting the strut to move to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2. The strut 14 is mounted in a kingpost (not shown) which allows rotation about a vertical axis to enable the strut to be used as a rudder and the kingpost is carried by a yoke member 46 supported by a structure 30 comprising two arms 32 pivotally mounted on brackets 38 in the recess 40. The restraining member 42 is mounted between the body of the craft and the yoke 46. Movement of the strut 14 between its retracted and extended positions is effected by a cylinder 62 acting between the yoke 46 and the pivotally connected ends of upper and lower supports 66, 68, the other ends of which are carried by extensions of the arms 32 and a bracket (not shown) on the support 30, respectively. In a simplified arrangement the supports 66, 68 are dispensed with and the cylinder 62 is mounted on the body of the craft. The restraining member 42 may be replaced by an energy absorbing member in the form of a cylindrical plug which is drawn through a tube of smaller diameter permitting controlled movement of the strut 14. A similar mounting for the aft foil carrying struts of the craft is also described, but in this case since the actuated position of the strut is aft of the extended position then a servomotor actuated pin is provided to link the restraining member to the support for the strut when the strut is in its extended position.
