Abstract
1398466 Active carbon agglomeration COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 22 Jan 1974 [26 Jan 1973] 4050/73 Heading C1A An agglomerate comprising comminuted active carbon set in a thermosetting resin binder may be made by mixing the constituents, subjecting the mixture to an agglomeration process, and heating the resultant agglomerate to set the resin. Preferably the comminuted active carbon is ground to a size of less than 120 B.S. mesh before mixing it with the binder, which may be one of a phenol-formaldehyde resin, a urea-formaldehyde resin, a hydrocarbon-formaldehyde resin and a furane resin; the ratio of carbon to resin is between 19 : 1 and 4 : 1 by weight; and water is added to the mixture of carbon and binder to assist in the agglomeration process, which may comprise either a vibratory stage or a compacting stage. A second solid, in particulate form, may be added to the mixture to act as seeds for pellet formation, and additional binders may be used to impart special advantages-e.g. water solubility or heat stability.
