Abstract
1398391 Rotary cutting apparatus MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 1 Aug 1972 [2 Aug 1971] 35958/72 Heading B4B Apparatus for cutting strip material 12 into lengths and applying the lengths in spaced relationship on a travelling surface 14 comprises an applying wheel 18 with a peripheral speed equal to that of the surface, a vacuum system for engaging the tape end with the periphery of the wheel, a cutting bar 16 mounted on the applying wheel co-operating with a cutting blade 24 and means to feed the tape at a slower speed than that of the surface but to advance the tape end during cutting at the surface speed. The cutting blade is resiliently mounted on a second wheel. The surface 14 may be on a series of ribs. The cutter bars 16 are arranged on the wheel 18 which has an apertured periphery against which the strip 12 is drawn by vacuum. Strip is fed to the wheel from a roll 28 via rollers on a plate 44 pivoted at 46, the plate being oscillated by crank means 48, 54. The blades 24 are mounted on a wheel 26 so as to be pivotable on the heads of adjusting bolts 88 against springs 90, the blades being held normally against stops 94. Each blade assembly is carried on an arm 96 pivoted on the wheel for movement relative to it by a fixed cam 100. The blade cutting edge. 22 is angled, Fig. 6, and guide members 86 project from either end. The peripheral speed of the members 86 and edge 22 is slightly greater than that of the cutting edge 20 of each bar 16. In operation, the guide members 86 initially engage the bar edge 20 on either side of the strip and, owing to the speed difference referred to above, the blade is pulled off the stop. At the same time, the arm 96 has been allowed to pivot in the same direction (anticlockwise as shown) on the motion of the wheel 26. Normally the strip advances at slightly less than the peripheral speed of the wheel 18, causing slip, but during the cutting operation the plate 44 swings forward to permit speeding up of the strip advance. After cutting and prior to disengagement of the guide members 86 from the edge 20, the cam 100 pivots the arm 96 clockwise so that the stop 94 moves towards the blade to receive it as it slips free of the edge 20. A wheel 73 applies oil to the blades 24.
