Abstract
1398384 Lubicating oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 5 July 1972 [7 July 1971] 31848/71 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] Catalysts used for producing lubricating oils by hydrocracking are prepared from an alumina hydrogel, which on drying and calcination would give a xerogel having a compacted bulk density of 0À75-1À6 g./ml. and a pore volume of 0À15- 0À5 ml./g., by impregnating with an aqueous solution of one or more compounds of Ni, Co, Mo and W to provide a content of these metals in the finished catalyst of 30-65% by weight expressed as the metal oxides, and drying and calcining the composite. The catalyst can also comprise up to 10 wt. per cent F and can be used in the sulphided form. The feedstocks which are hydrocracked can be vacuum distillates or residuals, or waxes separated from such oils, e.g. spindle oil, brightstock and slack waxes obtained from these. The hydrocracking can be carried out at 325-450‹ C., 10-250 bar, a hydrogen/feed ratio of 100-5000 N1 hydrogen per kg. feed and a space velocity of 0À2-5 kg. feed per litre of catalyst per hour. The hydrocracked oil can be hydrofinished at 225-400‹ C. using a catalyst comprising one or more of Cr, Mo, W and the Group VIII metals. The hydrocracked oil or the hydrofinished oil can be dewaxed with a mixture of methyl ethyl ketone and toluene at - 10‹ to - 40‹ C. and the separated wax can be recycled to the hydrocracker. Oils are produced having viscosity indices of up to 150 after dewaxing at - 30‹ C.
