Abstract

1398000 Lubricants MOBIL OIL CORP 6 Sept 1973 [20 Oct 1972] 42061/73 Heading C5F [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] Lubricating oil compositions comprise detergent additives which are reaction products of amines with alkenyl succinic anhydrides prepared by reacting maleic anhydride with an olefin or halogen-substituted olefin having at least 20 carbon atoms in the presence of an organic peroxide at elevated temperature, the peroxide being added to a heated premixture of olefin and anhydride. Preferred amines are alkylene polyamines and carboxylic acid and aldehyde derivatives thereof. The olefin preferably contains up to 500 carbon atoms, and may be an olefin polymer, e.g. polypropylene, polybutene, polyisobutylene or a halogenated derivative thereof. Examples describe succinic anhydrides derived from polybutenes, polypropylene, decene decamer and trimer and tetramer of C 15-18 olefins.
