Abstract

1397890 Linear motors INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 15 Nov 1973 [19 Dec 1972] 52953/73 Heading H2A An electromagnetic actuator comprises a magnetic field source 4 having two elongate parallel surfaces, the direction 16 of the magnetic field being perpendicular to the two surfaces, an elongate member 2 of magnetic material disposed parallel to but spaced from the source 4, a coil 8 mounted around and movable relative to the member 2 and a flux return member 6 completing the magnetic circuit of the source 4. The source 4 may comprise a permanent magnet or a coil or both. The coil 8 is D.C. energized. A core 12, Fig. 4 (not shown), fills that part of the coil 8 not occupied by the member 2 and is connected to a core 10 in rolling or sliding engagement with the stationary part of the actuator.
