Abstract

1397700 Fuel injectors CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 6 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 26996/73 Heading F1B A fuel injection system includes a fuel nozzle assembly having an annular leakage collection chamber 55 surrounding a housing 21 in which a valve chamber 31 has an inwardly opening valve 45 controlling fuel flow to the nozzle outlet, the valve having an area acted on by pressurized fuel within the valve chamber and having an opposing area acted upon by fuel in a low pressure chamber 35 which is connected to the leakage chamber 55. Pressurized fuel from line 19 passes via filter 44, recess 39, passage 40 into chamber 31. At a predetermined fuel pressure in chamber 31 the valve 45 unseats against spring 54 allowing fuel flow to the nozzle orifice. Leakage from chamber 31 between valve guide 46 and bore 51 passes via chamber 35 passages 34a, 36, groove 37 and port 38 to the leakage collection chamber 55. After chamber 55 is filled with fuel the pressure in chambers 55 and 35 increases so that some reverse leakage occurs when valve 45 closes to establish pressure equilibrium. Similar leakage into and out of the chamber then occurs thereby obviating any hydraulic blocking.
