Abstract
1397319 Producing oxide-containing alloys SQUARED CO 30 July 1973 [25 Aug 1972] 39664/72 Heading C7D Electrically conductive materials containing a first metal and an oxide of a second metal are produced by mixing the powdered first metal and second metal oxide, heating in a reducing atmosphere to form an alloy of the two metals and internally oxidizing the second metal. Examples include the preparation of silver/cadmium oxide, or silver with the oxides of tin or zinc; and copper with either cadmium oxide or zinc oxide. In an alternative embodiment, mercury oxide can be incorporated in the starting material and is reduced/oxidized in the same way as the second metal oxide; also an alkali metal oxide which remains unchanged throughout can be utilized. In the case of e.g. Ag/CdO, the reduction temperature should be between 200 and 700C to minimize sintering, while the internal oxidation is performed at 500 to 700C. The resulting particles can be compacted, sintered and coined to form, e.g. electrical contacts.
