Abstract

1397258 Coating steel with sintered aluminium; electro-depositing iron BRITISH STEEL CORP 18 Oct 1973 [3 Nov 1972] 50773/72 Headings C7B and C7D A steel substrate such as strip is coated with a first layer of Fe, then with Al powder and then compacted, cold reduced at least 30% and finally sintered. The compacted strip may be sintered at 300-500‹C prior to a cold reduction of 50-90%. The strip substrate may be 0.1-0.004" gauge and the first Fe coating is preferably electro-deposited. The Al powder, 40 micron size is applied electrostatically or as a slurry and may be mixed with up to 0.5 wt. per cent of SiO 2 particles coated with a hydrophobic organic material e.g. dimethyl chlorosilane. The slurry may also contain cellulose ether, ammonium bichromate, and gelatine. The Fe coating may be electro-deposited from a bath of 100 g/l ferrous chloride and 10 g/l tri sodium citrate at 50‹C and 2700 A/sq.m. Alternatively ferrous sulphate may be used. The coated substrate is then wetted with sodium silicate prior to coating with Al powder.
