Abstract
1397102 Blasting CARRIER DRYSYS Ltd and PRESSED STEEL FISHER Ltd 15 March 1973 [22 March 1972] 13396/72 Heading B3D A method of preparing the surface of a metal substrate for the application of paint or the like with abrasive comprises bombarding the surface with a stream of solid particles having an abrasive action the particles being formed of a material which is transformed to vapour below 350‹ F. at atmospheric pressure. In apparatus for carrying out the method, metal sheets 11, such as vehicle bodies, are carried by a conveyer 12 through an enclosure 13. An array of nozzles 14 is connected by an entraining device 19 to a source of compressed air 17, the device 19 being supplied with chips of ice from a shredder 18, the chips acting as the abrasive. A valve controlled outlet passage 15 is connected to the top of the enclosure. Instead of a compressed air source, a liquid pressure source may be used and a further outlet 16 is connected by a line 20 and pump 21 to return the used liquid to the source. The particles formed by the shredder may be in the form of spikes, cups or plates from 400 to 1000 microns in size. The particles may be formed by cooling vapour laden cloud or by a diabetic compression of air containing 1% water vapour. The particles may be formed of solid carbon dioxide. The abrasive action may precede the coating of the surface with paint or the like, the sheets being dried by passage through a drying oven before coating. The particles may be directed at the sheet by means other than a pressurized fluid stream. The method may be used to remove rust, spots or grease, the compressed air then having a free solvent or other relative agent.
