Abstract

1397009 Nut runners INGERSOLL-RAND CO 19 Dec 1973 [22 Jan 1973] 58755/73 Heading B3N A power wrench comprises a wrench body 2, 3, 4, a rotary motor housing 18 rotatively mounted in the wrench body, a motor rotor 24 rotatively mounted in the motor housing, a spindle 25 being adapted to be connected to a fastener, means for controlling the rotation of the motor housing 18 relative to the spindle so that when the spindle stalls rotation of the housing allows a pulsating torque to be applied to the spindle. The means for controlling the rotation of the motor housing is shown as a fluid shear type clutch consisting of concentric cylinders 10, 11 which are keyed to spindle 14. Pins 43 ensure rotation together of rotor cylinder 21 and the housing 18. The clutch may be replaced by other means for actively or passively restraining the housing 18. For example, a low speed high torque motor may be used to drive the motor housing slowly in a direction opposite the rotor. A second motor might be used to give a two speed operation by driving forward during run down and reversing for the final torquing operation. Alternatively, the second motor would continue to drive forward causing cyclic overriding torque to be applied to a fastener. With a plurality of power wrenches a single control means may be used externally of the wrenches with suitable means for transmitting reaction torque of the motor thereto.
