Abstract

1396824 Electrophonic musical instruments; drums GIBSON Inc 3 April 1973 15913/73 Heading G5J A transducer 40 for transmitting electrically sounds from a vibrating part of a musical instrument comprises coil 18 wound round permanent-magnet system 14, 16, and two ferromagnetic armatures 60, 64 to induce in the coil e.m.f.s. related to the vibration. Mounted on a drumskin, armature 64, separated from the polepieces 14, 16 by a thin felt-like layer 66, transmits predominantly high frequencies. Armature 60, held loosely in a cavity inside a sponge-like body 50, transmits predominantly low frequencies as the whole device vibrates. In a second embodiment, mounted inside a guitar body, the wooden bridge carrying the strings rests on armature 64. If the bridge is ferromagnetic it can serve directly as armature 64. If the transducer is mounted under part of the strings away from the bridge, the motion of metallic strings is stated to take the place of movement of armature 64, no longer required. The sensitivity to high and low notes can be controlled by variation of the masses of armatures 60 and 64.
