Abstract

1396308 Electrodes for lead-acid batteries ELECTRIC POWER STORAGE Ltd 11 May 1972 [11 May 1971] 14258/71 Heading H1B In an assembly of positive and negative leadacid battery electrodes the active material composition of the positive electrodes has a porosity of at least 50% (as defined below) and contains 0À01 to 1% by weight of SiO 2 , and the active material composition of the negative electrodes contains 0À1 to 0À8% by weight ligninderived lignosulphonate material. The percentages by weight are based on the lead content of the compositions. Porosity is defined by the volume of the pores as measured by the volume of mercury which can be forced into a sample of the composition up to a pressure of 5000 p.s.i. divided by the actual geometrical volume of the sample. The preferred silica is " Gasil " (Registered Trade Mark) and the preferred lignosulphonate is " Vanisperse " (Registered Trade Mark). These two materials, conjointly, improve the battery capacity whilst enabling less lead active material to be used in both the positive and negative electrodes. The negative electrode composition may also include barium sulphate. The Specification sets out specific compositions in parts by weight.
