Abstract

1396150 Locks STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES LTD 24 Nov 1972 54315/72 Heading E2A [Also in Divisions G4 and H4] A card reader, e.g. for a telephone (Figure 1, not shown), is disclosed. The card has tmbossed, perforated or magnetic characters thereon, e.g. numbers, and is inserted manually into a slot formed by portions 7-10 where it presses a reading head back against a spring 18. When the card is fully inserted its leading edge is depressed by portion 21, the head is disengaged from the card, travels along the card under the control of spring 18 at a rate determined by dashpot 14, 15, reads the characters, and ejects the card by hook 23. Embossed characters may be read by closing electrical contacts 22, a friction pad 26 may be provided, and the characters can be converted to audio frequency signals for transmission to a data centre. The reader could also be used in a look, credit retailing, employee identification, or attendance recording.
