Abstract
1396094 Supply systems for discharge lamps THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 24 Jan 1974 [24 Jan 1973] 3690/73 Heading H2H A starting and controlling circuit for a pair of discharge lamps 10, 24 comprises a transformer 14 having a primary winding 12 connected in series between a terminal 18 of an A.C. source L, N and a terminal of the lamp 10 and the secondary winding 20 connected in series with the lamp 24 so that the series circuit is in parallel with the lamp 10, a starting switch 26 being connected in parallel with the lamp 24. The series circuit includes a capacitor 22 for power factor improvement. When a mains switch 16 is closed, and with the starter switch 26 closed, the lamp 10 starts as in a conventional semiresonant-start system, the lamp 24 starting thereafter when the switch 26 opens. The valves of the various components are so chosen that the currents through the lamps are equal in magnitude with the current through lamp 10 lagging, and that through lamp 24 leading, the supply voltage thus reducing stroboscopic flicker. In other embodiments a choke may be included in series with the capacitor 22 or a choke included in series with the lamp 10 and a third winding on the transformer 14 for heating a filament of the lamp 10.
