Abstract

1395797 Measuring radiant heat E M ROYDS-JONES 13 June 1973 [22 June 1972] 29185/72 Heading G1A A detector for radiant heat comprises two adjacent surfaces which receive the radiation, one surface absorbing radiation better than the other so that the resulting temperature difference between the surfaces is a measure of the incident radiation. The surface temperatures are measured by thermistors. The differential measurement removes the effect of conducted heat, e.g. due to ambient air. In the Fig. an aluminium foil b has a blackened area and a shiny area behind which thermistors a are adhered. Zenor diode C limits the voltage applied to the thermistors to prevent the current through them producing significant heat. Amplifier d and meter V provide a reading of the temperature difference.
