Abstract

1395186 Disproportionating olefins PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 11 April 1972 [12 April 1972] 16686/72 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] Disproportionation of an ethylenically or acetylenically unsaturated organic compound which is capable of undergoing the "olefin reaction", i.e. a reaction schematically represented as is effected by a process wherein the compound is contacted, at a temperature greater than 500‹ F. but not greater than 750‹F., with catalyst which has been prepared by a procedure wherein catalyst comprising tungsten oxide and alumina, which catalyst has been activated by heating at a temperature in the 1100-1800‹ F. range, is treated by contact with hydrogen or carbon monoxide at a temperature in the 300-1800‹ F. range, for example with hydrogen in the 800- 1800‹ F. range or with carbon monoxide in the 300-1500‹ F. range. Activation may be effected in vacuo or in the presence of oxygencontaining gas, for example in a flowing stream of dry air, or in nitrogen or helium or a suitable gas mixture; more than one activating gas may be used sequentially. The hydrogen/carbon monoxide may be used when diluted with inert gas, for example nitrogen; refinery off-gas may be used. The catalyst may include additional material selected from magnesia, silica, titania, zirconia, thoria, oxides of alkali/alkaline earth metals, aluminium halides and organometallic compounds, for example aluminium trialkyls. As exemplified, propylene is converted to reaction product containing ethylene and butene in the presence of 5 weight per cent tungsten (calculated as WO 3 ) on alumina catalyst.
