Abstract

Tea, rolling.-In a tea-leafrolling machine in which the leaf passes through the space between a roller 1 and an outer casing 3, which may be rotated in opposite directions, and one or both of which may be reciprocated longitudinally, the roller is tapered towards each end, and the casing is formed so that the clearance between the casing and the roller progressively decreases towards the outlet end, the area of clearance at the outlet being about one. quarter that at the inlet. The roller and casing are formed with spiral ribs or grooves 4, 5, or with disks or studs. The machine is operated from a shaft 12 through a shaft 18<1> which rotates the casing through gear-wheels 16, 19, 17, 20 and rotates the roller through sprocket-wheels 29, 30 connected by a chain or the like. The roller is reciprocated by a sleeve 26, and a connecting-rod 25 adjustably connected to a disk 24 rotated by a worm 23 and gear-wheel 21 from the gear-wheel 19. To prevent overheating the discharge end of the casing may be perforated to admit air, or the leaf may be passed in series through two machines separated by a cooling hopper.
