Abstract

1394245 Exercising apparatus D DEJONGH 10 July 1973 [13 July 1972] 32739/72 Heading A6M A physical exercising device includes two handles 12, one secured to a piston tube 14 and the other to a hollow piston rod 16 carrying a piston (not shown) slidable in the piston tube 14, an outer sleeve 18 secured to said other handle 12, an end plug 20 closing the end of the piston tube 14 and having a bore 22 through which the piston rod 16 is slidably received, the plug 20 having a marker 26a cooperating with a slot 28 in the sleeve 18 and with a scale located adjacent the slot 28 to indicate tension or compression forces exerted on the device by the user, and two rotary valves 30, one on each handle 12, for controlling the communication with atmosphere of the piston tube spaces on opposite sides of the piston. The marker 26a is formed on a ring 26 which is located in a recess 24 in the end plug 20. The device is also provided with a pair of cursors 32 which are slidable on the sleeve 18. The sleeve is marked with scales A, B, C, D, (Scale D is not shown). Scales A and B have a common zero at the centre of sleeve 18 and scales C and D have their zeros at opposite ends of the sleeve 18. In use, if scales A and B are to be used, the user opens both valves 30, moves the marker 26a to the zero of scales A and B, closes both valves 30 and slides both cursors 32 up to the marker 26a. The handles 12 may then be pulled apart or pushed together, the marker 26a moving the cursors 32 to indicate the maximum forces exerted by the user. When using scale C, the marker 26a is first set to its zero as described above and the handles are pushed together. When using scale D (not shown) the handles are pulled apart. The device may be operated under low loads by partially opening the valves 30.
