1394240 Oxygen steel-making CENTRO SPERIMENTALE METALLURGICO SpA 30 June 1972 [13 July 1971] 30685/72 Heading C7D In a process for refining liquid pig-iron in a stationary or rotating vessel by blowing in oxidizing gas, curves are established for standard heats of the variation of a parameter m with time where m is calculated continuously according to the formula:- In the formula K is a constant, A is the instantaneous flow-rate of the oxygen portion which reacts with carbon to form carbon monoxide, B is the instantaneous flow-rate of the oxygen portion which reacts with the carbon monoxide to form carbon dioxide and Q is the instantaneous total flow rate of oxygen to the metal bath, the calculation being made by computer. A tolerance band of permitted variation of m is established around the standard curves. The refining of a non-standard heat is conducted so as to maintain the value of m within the tolerance band of a selected standard curve, the correspondence being maintained by varying the flow rate of oxidizing gas and/or the distance of the delivery head of a refining lance from the bath surface in accordance with the variations of m as calculated by a computer.
