Abstract

1394069 Spring applied brake actuators CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO Ltd 2 May 1973 [12 May 1972] 22359/72 Heading F2F In a brake actuator having a piston structure actuated by a spring 15 to operate brakes, the spring acts through an annular thrust plate 16 and a bearing ring 17 of curved profile engaging a complementary surface on the structure so that spring thrust misalignment can be accommodated. The plate 16 has an angled surface 16a abutting the ring 17 of anti-friction material, which in turn abuts a sleeve 18 of the structure which comprises a dished pressing 2 or the ring 17 directly abuts the pressing. The actuator is combined with a compressed air actuated diaphragm 8, a rod 3 controlled by the piston 2 abutting the diaphragm in the rest position via a thrust plate or washer 11. For release of brakes if the air supply has failed a bolt 26 is turned to axially move a multi-armed spider 27 as shown, or a strap, engaging a radial abutment flange 18a of the sleeve 18 to retract the structure. During spring actuation, H-section guides 28 on the sleeve 18 slide relatively to the arms of the spider 27.
