Abstract

1393939 Hydraulic shock absorbers A A COWAN 31 Aug 1972 [13 Sept 1971] 40299/72 Heading F2S In a shock absorber where the flow through the piston on rebound is partly along the same path as the flow on jounce, there are two passageways 46, 48 in the piston, both of which are open (as shown) when the piston is at rest and on jounce movements, and there is a pressure-responsive valve member 44 which may close the passageway 48 during rebound movements. The valve member 44 is biased away from a circle of apertures, which form the passageway 48, drilled through a hexagonal extension 38 of the piston. The passageway 46 is permanently open. A pin 30 (adjustable by means of a ball and detent, or a cam screw, Fig. 11, not shown) further restricts the flow through the piston. The exterior of the cylinder is formed with fins 62 (depicted in more detail in Fig. 1, not shown) which aid in cooling the shock absorber liquid, and provide alternative abutments for the lower seat 64 of a coil spring 20.
